Impact of induced madness, slow onset OR touched lightly and controlled:

John's influence would begin almost gently. People notice whispers first-- not audible words exactly, but the persistent sense that meaning exists if you just listen closely enough. Thoughts arrive half-formed, as though finished elsewhere before reaching the mind. Those touched grow distracted, contemplative, lingering too long in silence or staring at patterns in tile, pavement, or shadow. Sleep deepens but becomes crowded with unfamiliar dreams. Behaviour shifts subtly: conversations drift toward strange philosophy, coincidences feel significant, tempers soften or fray unpredictably as emotions bleed past their usual boundaries. Most remain functional, only faintly altered-- calmer in crisis, unsettled by normalcy, increasingly certain that reality possesses a hidden rhythm they are beginning to hear.

As exposure deepens, the change becomes visible. People move more slowly, as though listening to something others cannot perceive, reacting a heartbeat too late or too early because time no longer feels strictly linear. Empathy intensifies to uncomfortable degrees; strangers feel intimately known, crowds overwhelming, solitude profound rather than lonely. Language begins to fail them-- metaphors replace direct speech, sentences trail into reverent silence. Eventually the world stops feeling entirely solid: reflections linger too long, spaces seem larger inside than out, hallucinations might be experienced (go wild!), and identity loosens its grip.

Final Stage, OR if hit hard and uncontrolled:

From the outside, the person might go abruptly still or stagger as coordination fails, eyes unfocused or tracking things no one else can see, breathing uneven as their body struggles to reconcile conflicting sensory input. Speech, if it comes at all, arrives fragmented-- unfinished sentences, misplaced emotional reactions, laughter or tears without obvious cause. They may reach for walls, objects, or people as if confirming solidity, or recoil from empty space as though something immense occupies it. Observers would likely interpret shock, seizure, dissociation, or acute psychological breakdown.

For the individual, the experience feels like existence unfolding all at once without mercy or filtering. Time loses order; memories, present sensations, and possible futures collide into simultaneity. Every sound carries overwhelming significance, every person feels emotionally transparent, and the boundary between self and world thins to near-nonexistence. Fear mixes with awe as identity stops feeling singular-- more like being a viewpoint briefly existing in a vast process rather than a contained mind. The distress comes not from pain but from excess: too much perception, too much connection, too much meaning arriving faster than thought can organise it, producing the uncanny certainty that reality has not changed at all-- only the limits that once made it survivable have fallen away.

Individual effects

Go as hard or as light as you like! Maybe your character has strong mental barriers, or has a mind capable of comprehending cosmic horror-based forbidden knowledge, or whatever you want to dampen/nullify the effects!

About John Doe: John is half the fractured soul of the Great Old One, the King in Yellow. Discovering a portal intended to bring another cosmic entity into the world, The King in Yellow acted on opportunity and tried to slip through himself. However, the portal was closed before he could fully enter the human world, leaving him severed in two, with half his soul bound to a book and cast into the Dark World. John is the half that was bound to the book, and through canon events, has slowly learnt to become his own, entirely separate entity.

He regained a physical body when cast into the Dark World a second time, and it's a version of this I'll use when playing him embodied. He's like a rift in reality made solid rather than a colour per se. Touch his face and you'll find everything is where one would expect it to be on a human face. He has many very sharp teeth. He has a humanoid torso beneath his yellow robe which extends to where human hips would be, but below that... a multitude of tentacles. His entire body, if touched, is made up of fine, interlocking scales, vaguely similar to a snake's, but very much unnatural. He runs hot to the touch.

Inducing fear: what it says on the tin! Induce feelings of fear/panic. This works the same way as the above, and is within his control.

Mind control: He is also capable of mind control (forcing people to do things they don't want to do, whilst they remain self-aware and KNOW they're doing something they don't want to do).

Reality distortion: this includes things like destabilising physical laws, spatial distortion, and temporal anomalies. Characters might feel a weird pressure/feel light-headed if standing near him, or their immediate location might appear to bend/fracture. Happy to nerf this as much as needed!

Shape shifting: less that he can look like anything and more that his form isn't fixed, he can make himself appear smaller or larger, can become more spectral or be fully, solidly present.

Regeneration/fast healing: what it says on the tin

Teleportation: what it says on the tin. Obviously nerfed so he can’t leave.

Floating???: idk, he can ‘float’ above the ground.

Immortality:he’s functionally immortal but ofc totally here for it being ‘turned off’ for experiments (or left on so he has to suffer more…)

Physical abilities: as a Great Old One, he's significantly stronger, faster, and more agile than a standard human. Also his yellow robe is a physical part of him.

This is very much under construction at the moment so bear with me! But for now:

John is a Great Old One, an eldritch god of madness, and as such his powers and abilities are largely unpleasant. He'll be actively trying NOT to use them most of the time, but as they're very god-moddy, please OPT-IN if you would like to experience any of the following with your character at any point. If he does use the following powers with your character, it'll only ever be after we've plotted something out together, and there will need to be a valid reason for him to have decided to use them at all.

Inducing madness: John is capable of inducing madness in a victim, a skill which has the strongest impact when someone is already in a state of distress/trauma/crisis.

Inducing fear: what it says on the tin! Induce feelings of fear/panic.

Mind control: He is also capable of mind control (forcing people to do things they don't want to do, whilst they remain self-aware and KNOW they're doing something they don't want to do), which again works most strongly when a victim is in a state of distress/trauma/crisis. He is ESPECIALLY unlikely to use this in a negative capacity unless something has really fucked him up. He is MORE LIKELY to use a subtle version of it to encourage someone on when they feel like they're going to give up (a fight, a bad situation etc).

The following is much more likely to occur than the above three:

Reality distortion: this includes things like destabilising physical laws, spatial distortion, and temporal anomalies. HOWEVER this is a fairly major ability, and is also ill-defined in canon, so I'm nerfing it. He's half the fractured soul of the King in Yellow (they become two separate entities, John and Yellow), so I'd say it's already weaker than it was when he was the King in Yellow. It could be game breaking potentially, so I'd play it as high failure rate, where he's capable of only very small, brief distortions for anyone/thing within 10 feet of him. It could be things like people might hear colours, taste sounds, or forget basic concepts like names or time. They might feel a weird pressure/feel light-headed if standing near him, or their immediate location might appear to bend/fracture only to snap back seconds later. It would have no lasting ill-effect on anyone or the environment.

FEEL FREE TO DECIDE your character is experiencing some of the more minor effects of this (weird pressure, feeling light headed when standing near him, feeling vaguely unnerved for no reason) whenever you like, you don't need to opt in for this one and can just use it whenever if you like!
